The average consumer (read: not a gamer) will embrace AR/VR when they can create their own 3D content EASILY and will want to consume that content in an AR/VR experience. We create 2D content all day long with our phones — photos, videos, etc. When 3D object scanning becomes easy, consumers will use it. We don’t take black and white photos now — because color is easy, just as cheap, and gives a truer-to-life experience. In the era of film photography, that wasn’t always the case (yes, I’m dating myself because I lived through this shift). And even now, a 2D screen is a fine way to consume 2D content, be it photos or videos. Create content in 3D? Now you want to consume it, experience it in 3D. Tango is a great first step towards ubiquitous, easy 3D content creation. I am hopeful that Google will open up more of the data and features that Tango captures to developers so we can really see what can be unleashed on the platform.
