Dead Leaves and Goofy Faces
The Snapshot Series (#4)
I wake up early that morning in our friends’ sofa bed. Everyone sleeps. Instantly, I smile. Instead of spending our Fall break at home to prepare classes, we are spending it in Montréal. We have eloped! We have played truant! I climb out of bed. The floor creaks; I shush myself, giggling. I grab my coat and handbag, and leave. I am welcomed by a whirl of dead leaves, golden, bright red, orange, beautiful. I take a deep breath. I feel like running around, going anywhere, because this time, I can! This time, I am fifteen years younger! I take a few steps and make as much noise as I can against the fluffy carpet of leaves! I look through a café’s window and suppress an urge to make goofy faces! I prance in. I order coffee and take out a book. For the second time that morning, I giggle!
