I’d hesitate to say flawed — regardless of how many country fans use the Internet, observing patterns from those that do can still give us some meaningful insights. And I’d love to explore the political influences in outlaw country! Those artists have some fascinating stories.
South Dakota still has a much higher proportion of YouTube searches for country artists out of overall searches than Texas, regardless of the overall proportion of country fans who do or don’t use YouTube. For that to be relevant, that proportion would have to be different for each state.
I lived there for a few years and I totally agree, country is absolutely huge in Texas. That’s why I found some of the maps so surprising when I was putting this together. I’m just hesitant to write off data from YouTube and Spotify as inaccurate just because it doesn’t immediately fit my own personal experience.
