The history of the Mr. Olympia competition is filled with various incidents, tales, and controversies, but one particular event in 1997 stands out in the bodybuilding community for its intrigue and mystery.

Flex Wheeler had been preparing for the 1997 Mr. Olympia to challenge Dorian Yates for his title when, 48 hours before the event, he arrived at the host hotel with his left hand bandaged.

Wheeler claimed that six days prior, he was involved in an unsuccessful carjacking where he decided to fight his assailants instead of surrendering.

He reportedly knocked out a gun-wielding attacker together with a second person who came at him with nunchakus. In the melee, Flex sustained injuries that prevented him from participating in the Mr. Olympia.

Following the incident, rumours circulated that Wheeler had fabricated the story to avoid competing against Yates some even suggesting that Flex injured his hand punching a wall out of frustration.

Curiousl, this story was totally absent from Wheeler’s autobiography and it became enshrined in bodybuilding legend as the story of Flex Wheeler and the Ninjas!
