Civic Engagement

It is time to participate in my city.

I first moved to Colorado Springs in 1994 and quickly fell in love with the city and its quirky vibe. My favorite parts of the city were: downtown, Old Colorado City, and Manitou Springs. Yes, all the hippie parts.

I connected with the pagan community, attended full moon rituals, and made some very wonderful friends. We got jobs that paid the bills and drove all around the city and state on weekends. I couldn’t get lost in Colorado Springs because I always knew where West was.

But finding out what was happening in the city was like cracking a code.

My husband and I were constantly frustrated when we heard about something really cool that happened that weekend, after the fact, in one part or another of the city, because the news covered it. We registered for things like “Peak Radar” and the like but still, we always seemed to come in a day late or a dollar short.

When I was Irish Dancing, inevitably I would have performances the same weekends the cool things were happening as well.

Still, to this day, we find that this city has a lot of fun and interesting things that happen just under our noses and we don’t find out about them until it is too late.

So, with our move to our new house, we are also determined to be more ‘dialed into’ our city.

Tonight, that started with attending an event called “plan COS.” This was marketed toward millennials and encouraging them to engage in the planning of the next 20 years of Colorado Springs. Still, I was impressed at the number of people who attended and participated actively. I loved seeing so many people who care about this city. Not just about nightlife or money, but about education, and the citizens that have less.

I was energized by this meeting. There are many people in this city that truly care and are willing to put some thought into its future. I hopeful to seem more.
