Facepalm — How can this be?

I, like many, experienced something I never had before when the candidate I least wanted to win did in a presidential election, true depression and sadness for the country I grew up believing was one of the greatest governmental constructs ever.

These past several months have been like watching a slow motion train wreck. One thing after another the president keeps adding gas to a bonfire without regard to who gets damaged and how many lives are broken. Traditions that are supposed to be non-political and non-partisan, simply ceremonial he smashes them on the ground like a precious vase in the hands of a three year old.

This weekend he addressed the Boy Scout Jamboree a long-time tradition and busily went about his regular tricks of trashing those who are no longer a threat to him, demanding loyalty, and pretty much dashing asunder any semblance of tradition and positive message to these young boys.

My outrage is not only with him, and the Boy Scouts of America, but with the leaders and troop masters who did nothing when the boys booed the mention of Barack Obama, and did not walk out when the president went off the rails. I do not ask the Boy Scouts of America for a denouncement of the president’s speech. I ask that every parent that has a scout to pull their sons out of scouting. There are plenty of other organizations that do not hate and do not pass judgment on gays, religion, and the like, that can teach citizenship and the related skills just as well, or better.

It is time for the Boy Scouts of America to fold.

Then today… sigh. This guy has to attack those who put their lives on the line in combat. I do not believe in war, nor do I want to put others in harms way, but I know that many volunteer to put their lives on the line in the belief that the country has called upon them to protect our nation. No one should be barred from choosing to do so.

Yet, our president, chooses to roll back all the progress we made in the last decades in a Tweet. That it is okay to hate and marginalize others with half-truths and misconstrued facts.

Why is it so easy for people to hate others just because they live a life different than their own? What is it about their lifestyle that offends you? Why do you care? What business is it of yours?

I don’t see that those lives different than mine are less valuable. I have no need to bar them from my life or my business because they are different. I may not agree with every decision of every person’s life but it is their life. Live and let live.

I just worry for this country. This president is allowed to run amok and no one is holding him accountable. He is now figuring he can pardon himself so he is sure he is untouchable. I wish more people were students of history.

How dictator’s come to power:

  • They state they are the “Law and Order” candidate.
  • They harp on perceived weaknesses.
  • They blame government for all the societal ills.
  • They assure that they are the only leader “strong enough” to fix the problem.

Many perceive government in different ways. Some see government as the strict parent that should punish those who don’t follow the rules and others see it as the parent that is there with a helping hand when needed. Somewhere in the middle is probably best. Still, we are a representative republic and, right now, we have leadership that would happily overthrow that and rule by decree. And congress is letting him.

It is time for the members of congress to be held accountable for allowing the Executive branch to run amok and take away individual rights, profile people, and in general perpetrate hate. I will be doing my part fighting to replace our senator and congressmen who failed to do their duty when they are up for reelection.

Will you?
