I am a fan — the Barenaked Ladies

Everyone has a favorite band or two. One of mine is the Barenaked Ladies. I came to enjoy their music a bit after they hit the big time. I fully admit I was an NPR listener after moving to Colorado Springs in 1994 and I often only heard indy music or musicians that people shared with me. I had heard of the Barenaked Ladies and I thought it was a clever band name to get people to come to see them. (Apparently, some find it to be sexist, and, sure, it can certainly be seen as sexist but when you see a bunch of guys singing fantastic songs and playing amazing music, you get the joke.)

My friend Juliet introduced me to the Barenaked Ladies when she was so excited to go see them in Denver one summer. I entered the Barenaked Ladies universe at the Everything to Everyone album and quickly went back and grabbed all the previous albums and have been hooked ever since.

Tonight, I attended my first BNL concert. Many people told me that the Barenaked Ladies “give good concert” and they did not disappoint. From the moment they took the stage they went right into their music. They were energetic and clearly enjoyed singing their songs together.

There are so many things that make me a fan of the Barenaked Ladies:

They have fun.

I have yet to hear of a time when the Barenaked Ladies weren’t getting pure joy out of making music. It is clear to everyone who listens to their music that this is what they love to do.

The song “If I had a $1,000,000.00” pokes fun at how we all dream about having enough money to just not have to worry about money and do things for those closest to us.

Shopping is a fun song that tells us that everything will be alright when we go shopping.

If you didn’t already know it, the Barenaked Ladies wrote, and perform, the theme song to to Big Bang Theory. There is more than the verse you hear on the show.

Their serious stuff is equally as impactful

You know that the same energy that goes into their fun songs goes into their serious songs.

Tonight is the Night I Fell Asleep at the Wheel/Hidden Sun is a song that sneaks up on you. You don’t realize that it is a really tragic song about never getting back to those you love.

Tired of Fighting of with You says it all in the title.

They show how much they are willing to love with the song Give it Back to You.

They give good concert

The Barenaked Ladies don’t just travel from city to city and show up and throw a concert. They experience the cities they visit. Today they went to the Manitou Springs Arcade because Ed is a pinball junkie. They rolled their experience from their drive in last night and their visit to the Arcade into the experience. I have a copy of the BNL Red Rocks album and there they too customized their concert then too.

I had a great time tonight and I am glad I decided to buy the ticket to the concert when I saw they were coming to Colorado Springs. It was a fantastic concert. There were a bunch of people my age there but there were also a number of people younger enjoying their music just as much as I was.

The Barenaked Ladies… I am a fan.
