Bass drums come in all different sizes. Which one is right for you? That depends on what you’re planning on doing with it. Are you playing out every night? Are you heading into the studio to record an EP? 22" is the standard for sure, but maybe you are going for something different? Today we look at which bass drum you should get. Check out the video below for a comparison between 3 different sized kicks, or keep reading for a more in-depth analysis.

20" For The Gigging Drummer

18–20" kicks are perfect for an apartment dwelling drummer. If you play out every night or even a couple of times a week, you should go with a 20" kick or lower. The smaller kicks play at a higher frequency, which means you’ll be able to cut through the double bass in a jazz setting. Heck, some companies are experimenting with even smaller kicks, with a 6" depth! Now that’s portable.

22" The Industry Standard

Most kits come with a 22. Not too big, not too small. Just right. The 22" bass drums are great for playing pop, rock, jazz, and anything in between. You lose the portability of the smaller sizes, but gain a bigger slap on stage or in the studio. If you are just getting started and are playing in your garage, the 22" kick drum is right up your alley.

24" The Beast

24"+ bass drums are insane. If you’re playing bigger live gigs, your audience will feel the bass in their chest. Way too big for smaller jazz clubs, these giant drums are great for harder genres like metal. If you are playing a festival, or bigger arenas you should definitely have a 24" in your arsenal. With a big drum you’re getting a bigger sound. Because of that, when you’re playing something bass heavy like funk or hip hop, you’ll definitely make your band mates happy.
