Should Your Business Be On Instagram?
By now you have to have heard about Instagram, the photo-sharing social media site that Facebook purchased in 2012 and is taking over the world. By now you have also probably wondered or been asked if your business should be on the ‘gram (or “Insta,” as the kids call it), and the answer isn’t always yes. Unlike Facebook, not every business benefits from having a presence on Instagram, and not every business is prepared for the work that a strong Instagram account takes.
That’s why we came up with a simple test to see if your business is right for Instagram!
- Is your work photogenic? Plain and simple, does your work lend itself to the camera? For some businesses, the answer is an overwhelming “YES!”, and for others it isn’t so clear. For example, an architecture firm that creates amazing works of art is perfect. However, an information security firm is less suitable for this medium, simply because a room full of servers isn’t really that photogenic.
- Do you have someone who can dedicate a decent amount of time? If the answer is “yes” to the first question and “no” to this one, STAY AWAY. We tell people all the time, it is better to not have any social media presence than be dormant. Having a social media account for your business that hasn’t been touched in two months portrays laziness, and your clients don’t want a lazy partner in business. In order to make your Instagram business profile valuable, you have to devote time to liking, commenting, and sharing content. There are no shortcuts.
- Are your clients/audiences on Instagram? This one sounds like a no-brainer, but you would be surprised at how many businesses don’t take this into account. In order to answer this question, you have to know who your audience is. For instance, an oilfield services company might not be trying to attract clients via Instagram. Instead they may opt for an approach that lends itself to recruiting potential employees.
If you answered “yes” honestly to each of these three questions, then your business probably should be on Instagram. What are you waiting for? Go out there and take pictures of everything, and learn what works for your brand. Don’t be afraid to take chances and show your creative side!
