Game Trails in the Carpet

Furry footfalls skirt the wall
at night, faux hunters prowl
our urban shelter,
chasing a lost high
PRIMORDIAL.

They kill time mostly now,
like us, the aging couple
with the aging cats
perched high above the rumbling
parade of cars
all headed for the beach.

Sometimes I hear the thunderous paws
go ambling through the night
and wonder
if we traded peace for passion
when we nested in a loft and quit

The risk
…..The thrill
………..The hunt
……The catch

To trade it for
stability of safe and ordered
urban hermitage?

Yes, why else the game trails in the carpet?
