Jill Stein pushes for a recount

Jill Stein of the Green Party

Jill Stein, the Green Party candidate, has been wreaking havoc in battle ground states by pushing for a recount due to the suspicion of tampering with voting machines or fraud. In following the post elections stories, Jill Stein’s name has become quite a highlight in the news.

Jill Stein has started an online funding campaign to help recount the votes. Through researching current topics for these articles I have noticed that it is so much easier now to communicate a point and gather support through the interent. The three states going through the recount are Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. To ensure these states go through a recount, Stein has to raise 9,500,000.00 dollars- and the state’s officials are resisting by raising the cost to make it more difficult. Stein also shares, “We received word yesterday that the final estimate for the filing fee for the recount in Wisconsin is $3.5 million — an outrageous cost increase from the initial estimate of $1.1 million that was given to us by WI state elections officials based on the last statewide recount.” Jill Stein writes on her donor page, “Election integrity experts have independently identified Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin as states where “statistical anomalies” raised concerns. Our effort to recount votes in those states is not intended to help Hillary Clinton.” Though Hillary voters see this as a lifeline to change the election, Hillary Clinton has stayed quiet about the issue of recounting votes, though her campaign has said they would cooperate with the green party in the recounting efforts.

When questioned if there is any evidence of fraud or tampering, Jill Stein said there is no evidence at all. The only inclination that there might have been tampering is a predictor that said if anything had happened, it would be in the state of Michigan, Pennsylvania or Wisconsin- three states in which Trump narrowly won. Stein reports that she just wants to make sure the American people are getting their voice heard, yet many are asking that she drops the recount efforts; she refuses to hear those voices. Through following poloitics in class, I have learned that a lot of politics has to do with persuasion and gaining peoples trust.

Many people are questioning what exactly these recounts will do for the country since they are spending millions of dollars on something highly unlikely. The Michigan attorney general said. “It is inexcusable for Stein to put Michigan voters at risk of paying millions and potentially losing their voice in the Electoral College in the process,” Schuette stated on the issue of recounting.

Michigan now has to do a manual recount to ensure the votes are accurate. When asked if he thought the machines had been tampered with, Mark Brewer said, “We have no proof of that. … There’s a possibility of fraud; there’s a possibility of manipulation. The only way to eliminate that is to do a manual recount.” It is said to be unlikely that there is any change.

“Just a Stein scam to raise money!” Trump tweeted after the recount in Pennsylvania had been dropped. Soon after, Stein said she would now escalate the efforts in Pennsylvania through a federal lawsuit after just stating that she would drop the efforts earlier.

States like Pennsylvania have raised the cost from 500,000 to 1 million, challenging Jill to raise more money, and hopefully put her to a stop. “The judge’s outrageous demand that voters pay such an exorbitant figure is a shameful, unacceptable barrier to democratic participation,” Stein states. “This is yet another sign that Pennsylvania’s antiquated election law is stacked against voters. By demanding a $1 million bond from voters yesterday, the court made clear it has no interest in giving a fair hearing to these voters’ legitimate concerns over the accuracy, security, and fairness of an election tainted by suspicion.”

Jill translates that since Pennsylvania has now raised the amount of money, that they are hiding something from the people, when in fact; they’re just trying to save the voters money. Stein during her speech that the ultimate goal of the recount is so that American’s can have a voting system they can trust. She claimed that her intent was not to change the outcome of the election but merely to make sure that the votes have been protected and not tampered with. To many, this effort seems like a waste of time and money.

These recounts have actually been proving more people voted for Trump that initially thought. Stein, in response to Trump’s disapproval of the recounts, states, “We are here to assure Donald Trump that there is nothing to be afraid of. If you believe in democracy, if you believe in the credibility of your victory, put down your arms, end your bureaucratic obstruction.” She taunts.

Through all of this conflict, Jill Stein has brought more attention to herself. Some say she is conducting a scam while others think she is soaking in the spotlight while she can. The results of the recount from Michigan are expected to be known by December 13.

Through this process of writing about current political events, I’ve learned the importance of knowing what is actually going on in the country. It is interesting to see how things have changed with the aid of social media that sparks new and unspoken opinions.
