Where Did the Word Melange Originate From?
Melange is a French word that means “mix”. This name is given to this fabric due to its property, this fabric is never made out of one fiber or one color. This fabric is made either with the mix of fiber or combination of color. Due to the blend of fiber, the fabric is very soft, dual tone, and has a luxurious look.
What is Melange Yarn?
Melange yarn is made out of a mix of 2 different kinds of fibers or a blend of different colors. The fibers are mixed before the spinning stage, and dual tone yarn is manufactured. Melange yarn can be made by mixing fibers such as cotton, polyester, viscose or modal. There are 100s of color options to make melange yarn. It can be made by mixing two different colors in a particular ratio.
What is Melange Fabric?
Melange fabric is made by knitting the melange yarn in the knitting process. There is a second method, we can also make melange fabric by knitting two different types of yarn. Melange fabric has a dual tone because two different fibers and color is taken at the time of production. Melange fabric is also called heather fabric. [Source]
Types of Melange Yarn are:
Several types of melange yarn can be made. The main basis of differentiation of this yarn is the type of fiber used, and it is also bifurcated based on how many fibers are used irrespective of the type. Below, there are different types mentioned.
Blended Melange Yarn: This is a yarn that is made out of two types of fiber. We can take any 2 fibers, say polyester, cotton, viscose, or modal. At the time of making this yarn, according to the desired result, the ratio of fibers is taken. The ratios could be PC 50:50, 30:70 or 70:30. All these 3 different ratios would give 3 different results.
Non-Blended Melange Yarn: This kind of melange yarn is made out of 1 fiber, but 2 or more different colors of the same fibers are taken at the time of production. In this yarn, the different colors of the same fiber are taken in different ratios according to the desired result. 100s of shades can be manufactured using this process
Tri-Blend Melange Yarn: In this melange yarn 3 types of fiber are used. These 3 types of fiber are used in different ratios, say 33:33:34. The fiber used can be cotton, polyester, and viscose. The dyeing in this yarn manufacturing takes place after the fabric is manufactured. The fabric is sunk into different colors, where polyester, the synthetic material, will absorb differently, whereas cotton and viscose will absorb the color differently. This gives the fabric a premium finish.
Embroidery Mélange Yarn: This is produced by taking raw fiber such as cotton or polyester. This gives the yarn long strands suitable to use in the production of textiles and embroidery.
Modal Mélange Yarn: This yarn is made out of the pulp of a modal tree. When this yarn is produced, different colors of modal fiber are mixed together, and then the fiber reaches the spinning stage. The modal trees are found near the seashore.
Modal/Cotton Combines Mélange Yarn: This yarn is manufactured using two materials: cotton and modal. These two fibers are mixed before the spinning stage, and the cotton/modal melange yarn is yielded at the spinning stage. This category can also come in “Blended Melange Yarn”.
Viscose Mélange yarn: This yarn is manufactured using different colors of viscose fiber. These fibers are mixed before the spinning stage. These different colors of fiber are combined in a particular ratio according to the desired color and dual tone desired.

Is it Environment Friendly or not?
Mélange are more environmentally friendly than other fabrics. When manufacturing mélange, we have to dye it at the fiber stage, and in this early dyeing process, we save about 50% of the water used in the process. Compared to other conventional methods, dyeing after spinning, which leads to a tremendous waste of water. [Source]
