May the next few months be a period of beautiful Transformation

Transformation is a word that has many meanings, all of which will vary depending on who you are. As a scientist, the word transformation defines the process whereby DNA from the environment is taken up by a cell. But, for most people, that doesn’t mean much. Change is probably the first thing that pops into your mind when you hear the word transformation, rather than a scientific definition. And while Change seems to be simpler to comprehend than a string of science, it is a concept we still battle to grasp and put into practice.

In a world where we are expected to fit into a mold that changes every other day, it seems that we would be accustomed to adapting to what Life throws at us. However, accepting Change, whether it be for the best or worst, proves to be a constant battle. When faced with a difficult decision that will throw us into the dark matter on the outskirts of our Comfort Zones, we tend to turn a blind eye and do everything in our power to stay where the grass appears to be greener. While Courage is required to stay in a Comfort Zone, one can’t ignore the giant leap of faith that is needed to plunge yourself into the dark matter.

Although a concept shared with me by one of the heads of my research facility is forged on the role of an individual in the broader scientific world, it can be applied to expanding your Comfort Zone and adapting to Change. Picture a dark room with only a single torch shining. The data and theories generated by scientists can be thought of as the light emitted by the torch. This represents new discoveries, questions, and ideas. The surrounding darkness represents all that is unknown. Slowly, as more is added to the mountain of Knowledge, the light starts to expand, and the unknown darkness grows smaller. Your Comfort Zone, the light, is all you can see and identify with. It is safe, and familiar. Stepping into the darkness is daunting as you never know what may be looming just on the other side of the light. But, unless you dare to take a leap of faith and give yourself an opportunity to transform, to Change, you will never experience the thrill of finding greener grass.

So, go ahead. Stare difficult decisions in the face, and make the needed Changes that will allow you to expand your light.
