A website designed to improve financial literacy among younger individuals, helping them become better prepared for life’s financial challenges.

Project Date: July 2023

Role: Team member working alongside Heaven Robinson and Cierra

Project Overview: This project marked the beginning of our year-long capstone project. In this initial phase, we were tasked with selecting a topic we were passionate about and that was feasible. Following this, we pitched the project and created a prototype. Our primary tools for collaboration and prototyping included Zoom, Google Slides, and Figma.

The Problem: My teammate and I had numerous ideas, but many of them were too broad and challenging to execute with our limited skills and time. Nevertheless, we managed to narrow it down to three different projects for the project pitch. My initial idea was a group traveling app to simplify travel planning with friends and family. However, further research revealed that similar apps were already established in the market.

My teammate, Heaven, proposed creating a life skills app to educate people on essential skills often overlooked. However, we encountered the same issue of broadness and limitations in time and platform for designing the prototype.

Original Ideas for Project Pitch

The Solution: After consulting with our professor, Chris, he guided us in refining our project. We discussed our target audience and the skills we were most passionate about. As a team, we unanimously agreed on financial literacy — a critical yet often neglected topic that many individuals encounter unprepared throughout life.

With students as our target audience, we set out to create an interactive and enjoyable website. Our final choice was a trivia-based storytelling website, taking users on a House Building Journey. This journey will incorporate various financial literacy topics, such as loans and budgeting, presented in a jeopardy-like scenario.

Research: After doing research on other financial literacy websites we found that many of them are great learning tools but they only covered one topic and it quickly got repetitive and we wanted to create a more comprehensive website that covers a range of financial literacy subjects.

Final Results for the prototype using Figma

Results: For the initial run of our project, I am pleased with the outcome. As we progress throughout the year, our commitment is to further develop and refine our idea and prototype. By the end I hope this website will become a valuable resource for students, enabling them to acquire essential financial skills for a secure future.
