As someone who works in the digital media and digital content creation space, I often contemplate possible solutions to the problem of fake news and information sharing. Perhaps there is an avenue that could be built that would allow oversight by the FTC? Information is the most valuable commodity to all consumers today and just as the FTC can protect consumers from false online endorsements, they could also protect against unsubstantiated fake news. Putting affirmative duties of disclosure on anyone purporting to be a news source could be a start in the right direction. Creating a reporting mechanism similar to those put in place already for copyright infringement or other violations of terms of service could also allow for users to police the content themselves.
