So would it be better if movies like this didn’t get made at all? When did we become a society of knee-jerk, automatic outrage as a lifestyle choice? Do you want to live in a world where something that was thought of as different or unusual, something contrary to societal norms, suddenly becomes acceptable overnight? Look how long it has taken this country to be as accepting of the LGBTQ community as it has, and how far the U.S. has come in comparison to an awful lot of other nations. Change takes time. Look at how long it took women to get the right to vote — the 19th Amendment was first introduced in Congress in 1878 and was ratified in 1920, but technically women weren’t able to vote from 1776 until 1920. Yet everything today seems to be a Veruca Salt demand for immediate action and change — “I want it now!!”. Why not be appreciative of the strides that are being made, rather than bitter over the ones not yet taken? By arguing over exactly how, or who, portrays a trans woman in a movie that wouldn’t have even been made 20 years ago, you’re deflating your own platform. Whatever gets done isn’t good enough because it isn’t exactly what you want — is that the deal?
