Pointing out privilege is one of the biggest thing you can do to shake a person’s world view. I would ask the people who are so incensed by your piece to stop, breathe, and reflect on your words. I would ask that they have the courage to challenge their own world view, and accept that those who are marginalized by our society might have a different world view altogether. It’s like saying “All Lives Matter” which completely ignores the point of saying “Black Lives Matter”. If you insist on smashing everything into your world view, and discrediting the experiences, the lives, the struggles faced by those peoples who do not look like you and who do not live the lives you lead, then you are separating yourself from the rest of humanity. As a species, we are vast and diverse. Not experiences the world the way that you do. Open your mind to the possibility that your world view does not reign supreme.
I respect that you had to leave. I think you did the right thing. And I think you did an even more courageous thing by writing this piece, pointing out the privilege. We are the water dripping on stone. It’ll take time, but we’re going to make a change, eventually.
