And worse, most of the policy makers who might be in a position to rein in the tech industry are proudly, profoundly illiterate about today’s technology, both in terms of implementation and of its implications.

I do think this is something that we can change, too. I recently had an interesting conversation with Bruce Schneier about how we could make “public interest technology” a career path just like “public interest law.”

Creating such a career trajectory would mean influencing both the demand side — from addressing the “prideful” illiteracy you mention to making public interest tech an economically viable career path — as well as the supply side — helping young tech workers and students understand that there is important work to do here.

I’d love to see more folks start talking about this and nurturing initiatives to make it possible!
