A Call to Holiness

This is a long overdue post that I’ve been refraining myself from writing. A few weeks back, God asked me to stop watching Game of Thrones. As a christian, I felt troubled by the question of how can I watch a show that constantly undermines my christian values and convictions in both subtle and unsubtle ways?

Jesus died on the cross to make us pure (Titus 2:14). He cleansed us through His blood to make us white as snow and be able to serve the Living God (Hebrews 9:14).

By making us pure, God is calling us into holiness (1 Peter 1:15). Anything that contaminates our body and spirit keeps us from reaching the holiness God desires for us (2 Corinthians 2:7).

By calling us into holiness, we are called to guard our hearts (Proverbs 4:23). Our hearts are composed of our spirit (conscience) and soul (mind, emotions and will). In our hearts is where we store all of our ideas, emotions and thoughts. Keeping our hearts pure is not an option, but a commandment for those who are in Christ, as we are new creation in Him (2 Corinthians 2:17). And those who do so will be rewarded; they will find God’s favor (Matthew 5:8).

I took a step towards holiness by sacrificing a TV show. Many years ago, I did the same with music that I listened to. God challenged me to turn away from music not centered on Him.

God might be asking you to do the same on a specific area of your life. I challenge you to take a bold step forward and break away from that specific thing and long for holiness to please Him. “Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.” (Hebrews 12:14)
