Elon Musk is famous for having slept 3 hours per day on factory floors, and working on the production line, side by side with his employees. But he isn’t always like that.

I’m not denying he doesn’t work incredibly hard, in fact, I believe in his vision since I own Tesla shares, I just want to make you aware of a clever trick he got up his sleeve.

It’s all about presentation. And Elon Musk is really good at it.

Elon Musk is really good at hiding that he is human.

Just listen for a minute. If you believed that Elon Musk goes to dinners every day, goes to drinks with family and friends every day, has parties, and spends more time on social media than he probably should, you would think he’s a loser.

That’s the impression that that person would then give off.

Obviously, we expect the reality to be different.

When we think of Elon Musk, we think he sleeps on factory floors, sleeps 3 hours per day, and works on the production line, side by side with his employees.

People can do that for a certain period of time, but you can’t do that your entire life because then you burn out or get a heart attack.

The point of all of this is that Elon Musk’s real work schedule is probably quite uninspiring and unimpressive. But the stories of the hard work in the past and the fact that we don’t see Elon Musk out drinking or partying in public, makes us think that he is still a workaholic.

And no matter whether that is true or not, it’s motivating for his employees. There is a reason why when you see Elon Musk, he’s always working.

If he’d be smoking weed on the Joe Rogan podcast every day, you probably wouldn’t want to work at Tesla or SpaceX, right?

Elon Musk

Recently, he warned his employees: “ Anyone who wishes to do remote work must be in the office for a minimum (and I mean *minimum*) of 40 hours per week or depart Tesla.”

He tweeted this because he and many other people believe that when you’re at home, you are not really working.

Someone might see you, having pleasure in your home for one second and therefore think you are always having fun instead of working.

People extrapolate

And that’s why many employers want employees to work from an office again. If you want to be successful or your employer's business wants to be successful, there needs to be a thicker line between work and your personal life.

It’s because impressions matter for your business or your employer’s business.

That’s why businesses spend billions on big offices in tall buildings. They want their clients to assume that the business is successful.

Impressions

Final Thoughts

Maybe the shift to work from home was too early and too rapid. Employers want to check if their employees are actively working and one way to do this is by returning to the office.
