Navigating the online dating scene can be tricky. Here’s a breakdown of what apps to use based on what you’re looking for.

If you’re looking for something casual…Tinder and/or Grindr

Tinder is the OG “swipe right, swipe left” app that revolutionized the online dating world by making it available at your fingertips (literally). Tinder matches you based on location and is connected to your Facebook profile. You can add up to six photos of yourself and a short bio, which other users can swipe yes (right) or no (left) on. If you and another person both swipe right, you are matched and can message one another.

Tinder is great if you’re open to meeting someone new, but you’re not ready for commitment. Tinder has earned a reputation as a facilitator of no-strings-attached hook-ups. So don’t expect to find your soul mate on the app. One study found that over 70% of college students had never actually met up with a Tinder match.

Grindr is similar to Tinder, but it is mostly used by gay men. Grindr is best for guys who want a lot of options, little small talk and instant meet-up opportunities. See a photo you like? Tap, chat, meet up.

If you’re a woman who knows what she wants…Bumble

Bumble is the feminist of dating apps. Similar to other apps, you create a profile with photos and a bio and swipe right or left. But once you match with someone, it’s on the woman to initiate the conversation. And she only has 24 hours to do so!

Bumble is great if you’re a woman who’s sick of receiving unsolicited creepy messages from potential suitors. But it’s also more than just a dating app. With features like Bumble Bizz and Bumble BFF, users can grow their professional network and build genuine, non-romantic relationships.

If you care about personality…Hinge

Tired of swiping after a second glance at a few photos? Hinge lets you create a full and detailed profile. In addition to basic information, like your hometown, age and height, you can indicate whether you smoke, drink and even want or don’t want kids. You then pick three questions to appear on your profile.

Hinge is great if you are looking for deeper connections and interesting conversations. Once you come across a profile you like, instead of liking the entire profile, you choose one thing, either a photo or question answer, in order to match.

If you need someone to accompany you on your coffee break…Coffee Meets Bagel

Coffee Meets Bagel is known to be more of a “dating” app than “hook-up” app. The app lets users create more personalized profiles and then, using an algorithm, it sends users one “bagel” (aka, potential match) a day. If you are mutually matched, you have eight days to message one another.

Coffee Meets Bagel is great if you’re not sure how to break the ice. You can skip the small talk with the app’s ice-breakers function. Once you match with someone, the app will conveniently send the other person an ice-breaker, so you don’t have to stress over whether to say ‘hi’ or ‘hey’ first.

If you’re serious about online dating…OkCupid

OkCupid is not for the faint of heart. The app uses a bunch of algorithms to help find your perfect match. Once you sign up, it asks you for basic information and a lengthy amount of questions. Questions like “Should the government require children be vaccinated for preventable diseases?” and “Do you believe in dinosaurs?” (Don’t believe me, see for yourself). You can choose to share your answers or keep them private as a way to help the app match you.

OkCupid is great if you’re genuinely invested in finding a partner. While the list of questions may seem tedious, OkCupid prides itself on providing users with a good experience. Plus, it’s free!

If you’re looking for a NJB…JSwipe/CDate/Minder

If you’re looking for a Nice Jewish Boy, a Nice Christian Boy or a Nice Muslim Boy, then try out one of the religious-specific dating apps. JSwipe is designed for people who want to meet other Jewish people. There is also CDate for Christians and Minder for Muslims.

If you’re looking for someone of the same sex…Her

Looking for something that caters to the LGBTQ community? Even if other dating apps have a setting that allow you to match with the same sex, the overwhelming majority of them are primarily aimed at the straight dating experience. (Shout out to OkCupid for being one of the only dating apps that has 12 different options for sexual orientation and 22 for gender identity.)

While many members of the LGBTQ community say Grindr is too “hook up” culture-y, Her aims to provide more than just dating. Largely geared toward women, the app is designed for those who identify as lesbian, queer or bisexual and functions as a dating app and platform where you can find local events and read and share content.
