See, here’s the thing. You’re absolutely correct that those shows are at least a hybrid of entertainment and journalism. I see a twofold problem though: one is shows like First Take which attempt to BE the story rather than inform or entertain about the story. The second is when the needle swings too far away from the “journalism” side on Sportscenter and ESPN.com, which are inherently news sources and thusly expected to have more journalistic integrity. Now, as to the reason everyone celebrates this demise, for me at least it’s ESPN’s pompous “it’s not us, it’s you” response to all of this. Read their own defenses of their practices, like the Public Editor column they do (which is hilariously supposed to be “impartial”) and then it becomes easier to see why people could revel in such a demise. That and things that are clearly not what the viewers want like SC6.
