The HIPAA thing is even weaker when you realize that he’s either blatantly lying through his teeth or he’s an absolute idiot. As a GM and someone who’s been in the pro personnel business for quite some time, he should be well aware of HIPAA laws, which explicitly do not apply to anyone besides doctors/medical personnel, healthcare processors, and clearinghouses. If a doctor tells him information, the doctor must make sure it’s above board, but Colangelo is not restricted in any way as far as disseminating (though of course you don’t want to piss off your player.) He can’t claim ignorance of this fact, because professional contracts have a clause built in about HIPAA and the release of information from team doctors to coaches and execs. Unless he’s going to claim he’s never read the contract, which as a GM would make him an idiot.
