Introduction to Depot-Level Maintenance

Depot level (D-level) maintenance and repair is referred to material maintenance or repair requiring the overhaul, upgrading, or rebuilding of parts, assemblies, or sub-assemblies, and the testing and reclamation of equipment as necessary, regardless of the source of funds for the maintenance or repair or the location at which the maintenance or repair is performed. To simply put, it is high-level maintenance performed on equipment requiring major overhaul or substantial or complete rebuilding.

Depot level Maintenance is performed on material necessitating major repairs or a complete rebuild of parts and end products which involves manufacturing of parts, testing, modification, and reclamation as required. It supports organizational and intermediate maintenance activities by more extensive shop activities and personnel of higher technical skill than are normally available at the lower levels of maintenance.

Depot-level maintenance supports Organizational Maintenance (O-level) and Intermediate Maintenance (I-level) by providing engineering assistance and performing maintenance that is beyond the capability of O- and I-level activities. Depot maintenance is work that must be done in an industrial type facility. Such a facility may either be civilian, military or both. If the work is contracted out to a civilian facility, the type of work is still depot maintenance.

Depot maintenance serves to support lower categories of maintenance by rendering technical assistance and performing that maintenance beyond their responsibility. Depot maintenance provides stocks of serviceable equipment by using more extensive facilities for repair than are available in lower level maintenance activities.
