Libraries everywhere will be celebrating 100 years of the world’s greatest storyteller, Roald Dahl. The Big Friendly Read, Summer Reading Challenge 2016 will feature some of Roald Dahl’s best loved characters and the amazing artwork of his principal illustrator, Sir Quentin Blake. The Big Friendly Read will highlight themes such as invention, mischief and friendship, which are explored in Roald Dahl’s most famous books. Libraries are delighted to be working with The Roald Dahl Literary Estate as they celebrate his Centenary this year, and library users of all ages will have a chance to reflect on their favourite Roald Dahl titles.

The Summer Reading Challenge is produced by The Reading Agency and delivered by libraries across the UK.

The challenge runs from Saturday 16th July to Saturday 10th September and is for children aged 4–11. They are encouraged to read 6 books to be awarded a medal and certificate at the end of the challenge. Children can join up at any of their local libraries and also take part in lots of activities during the summer holidays.

The children’s summer leaflet for events over the holidays is available from any library or can be found on the CCS website: www.ccslibraries.com

Croydon libraries have an array of workshops, activities and events for kids to get involved in. From quizzes to drama sessions, coloring in to ZooLab’s summer story of a fantastical tale of William and his heroic, one-millipede crusade to combat climate change and save the world, there is something for everyone to enjoy. CCS libraries also offer the chance to play, build and construct using household favorites LEGO as part of the LEGO education program and they’re hosting a taster session where you can build your favourite characters from Dahl’s most famous works.

The extensive program is sure to capture the imaginations of all who take part and this will be a great opportunity for kids to develop social skills and exhibit creativity, all extra curricular to their mandatory school study time.

The Summer Reading Challenge provides a brilliant platform for young children to engage in literacy based fun and is a fantastic introduction to see what their local library can offer them. Books are just the beginning of endless possibilities and your local library has so much to offer you and your family.

You would be a twit not to partake in this year’s gigantic Summer Reading Challenge!
