Social Media Marketing, why it matters.

As stated in the text book, Social Media Marketing,“Social media marketing is so important — it deals with the stuff you do all day long and shows you how to apply it to professional as well as personal activities.” This statement couldn’t ring more true to how social media marketing can enhance your business model.

What exactly is Social media marketing? In a blog post posted by WordStream, titled Social Media Marketing for Business’, social media marketing, or SMM, “is a form of internet marketing that implements various social media networks in order to achieve marketing communication and branding goals.” SMM focuses on covering activities including but not limited to, social sharing of content, videos and images for marketing purposes, as well as paid social media advertisements.

Why is social media marketing useful to a business? Forbes contributor, Jayson DeMers, wrote an article titled, ‘The Top 10 Benefits of Social Media Marketing’, in which he gives (in my opinion) 10 excellent reasons that SMM is beneficial to a budding business. In addition to higher brand authority, and increased brand loyalty, DeMers mentions increased brand recognition; Brand recognition is when a consumer can easily identify your product just from seeing your logo or hearing your tag line. Anytime you can increase your brand recognition, your business will be greatly benefited, social media are new and ever-changing platforms for you to get your brand exposed, which makes you easily accessed and recognizable, which will more than likely increase your sales. Another important factor is, improved customer insights. By using your social media platforms for your business you would be able to see what the customers like and what they don’t like. You can see what your customers are interested in as well as participate in conversations with them.

How do you “do” social media marketing? The internet has approximately 3 billion users, and 2 billion of those people are social media users. So how do you make your brand relevant on such a huge scale? If you don’t want mange your pages yourself or are unsure of how to manage them, a popular trend is to hire a Social Media Manager. This person has a special skill set in making your business’ presence known on the internet, they know what kind of content to post, and even when to post it to make the most traffic on your website and pages. Not only can they manage your pages for you but they manage the strategy, planning and execution of the social media campaign, monitor and respond to the online community, optimize the consumer’s online experience, as well as assist in the continued development of your social media platforms. By having someone who has the knowledge necessary to make your business relevant, the stress of doing these things will be taken off of you giving you the time needed to focus on other projects pertaining to your business. If you’re a more diy kind of person, Hubspot, did some research and found that “95% of marketers who use social media at least 6 hours per week indicated their social media efforts increased their businesses exposure.”
