Freshens Southwest Chipotle Chicken Salad

I chose to review an item from my favorite on campus restaurant, “Freshens.” The item I chose is off their salad menu, and is called the Southwest Chipotle Chicken Salad. The salad consists of the following ingredients; Romaine, chicken, black beans, onions, corn, tomatoes, cheddar-jack, salsa and crisps, with chipotle ranch dressing. The salad is also seated on a house made, crispy flat bread. You may pay for the salad using a meal swipe or pay $6.55.

I will start with the quality/look of the salad. After ordering I waited a few minutes and my order number was called. Right off the bat, the salad comes in a nice plastic container with a lid that is very easy for transporting. The romaine lettuce looked fresh while the crushed up, multi-color tortilla chips add a nice splash of color. Overall the salad looked very visually pleasing. After sitting down to eat, a further inspection showed the salad was missing black beans. I noticed all the other ingredients were there. The salad was already tossed which I feel is necessary when it comes to a good salad. Also, the salad had just the right amount of dressing not making it too soggy or dry. Other than the fact the black beans were missing, I was very impressed with the quality of the ingredients. Being much higher in quality than a pre-made salad one could buy at a gas station, or something equivalent. I would rate quality/visual appeal at 4.5/5 due to the missing black beans.

Moving on to taste I was very impressed. The dressing complimented the other ingredients very nicely. A nice creamy ranch with supersizing heat on the aftertaste. The romaine lettuce was crisp and very fresh. The salsa was an average Mexican red, adding a southwest twist. My favorite part was the crispy flat beard the salad was sitting on. It added a nice crunch, which I feel is necessary for any salad. Also, after finishing the salad, the remaining flat bread was a perfect tool for scooping up the leftovers. I would give the taste a 5/5.

Now for the real question, do I think the salad is worth your time and will I be back for another? I will definitely be back and I recommend stopping in to try it for anyone on the University of Akron’s campus. Also, the fact that it counts as a meal swipe makes it that much better for students. With the overall subpar food choices on campus, students should give it a try. So, stop into Freshens next time you’re hungry and looking for a quality salad.
