My back seizes when I try to straighten
Thankful for aspirin to ease the pain
Not a back injury
But a warning, a lament
A cry for our country as her ideals fade —

— The light of freedom
Flickering into smoke
As the fingers of control
Pinch the flame

We’ve felt it coming
The intent to push us down
Until even the painkillers won’t be enough

But the youth are strong and many
Wandering everywhere in stealth
They see the climate chaos
Hear the roar of repression
Feel the hopelessness of the homeless
They could buoy us with their ideals
Fill our minds with new ideas

I will stand strong with them through our mutual pain
Using my age and privilege
My many connections
My voice and words
My calm confidence in nature’s wisdom
For liberation
For love
For light

Walking into the land of trees
I pause and connect
Breathing in the fragrance of leaves, of soil, of ancestors
I feel your life energy
Rhythm of leaves in wind
Burrowing roots in soil
Water in vessels just under your bark
moving slowly in your labyrinth
carrying life-giving nutrition

You, huge magnificent pine tree
overlooking the valley out to the ocean
devoted to your place
watchful for hundreds of years
Guardian of the forest
I touch you in reverence
How can I embody your vision and dedication
in this time, in this place?
Vibrations of rhythmic sound flow into my hands
Caressing your bark
my heartbeat shifts to match yours
I hum into the deeper spaces on your bark
I sing you a love song in your language
You are not surprised
You accept my offering with grace
continuing your rhythmic call
I am yours, ancestor tree
