June Resolutions: Setting Goals Without a New Year

Making your goals stick longer than your post-its.

Recently I found a very enthusiastic post-it note under my desk that said “Day 1 of 30!” It was in my handwriting, but I had no idea what the post-it meant. Maybe it was from the first day of some long-forgotten diet. Maybe it was from the first day of waking up and going to the gym at 6 a.m. before work (after having read an article about the “10 habits of highly successful CEOs,” no doubt). Or maybe it was from some other, inspired plan to have the “first day of the rest of my life,” like every day somehow turns out to be. It got me thinking—how often do we make resolutions that actually stick?

January is always a popular time for making changes. If you look at the “Map My Run” app on my phone, you’ll see that I run 3 miles almost every day, except, of course, on January 2nd, when I run 6 miles. Because it is the new year, and it is the new me.

What if we had the chance to make changes more than just once a year? Maybe our resolutions would stick better if we didn’t wait twelve months to evaluate how they are going. What if we got to take a step back and think about what the direction our lives are taking when it is, say, the beginning of June?

In that spirit, we will be making some June resolutions. Twelve months seems too long to “try out” a goal without checking in on it. January resolutions are great; June resolutions are better. So, what are yours?
