Potsdamer Platz

Ist es nicht schön?

Potsdamer Platz holds the most memories for me. Located at the heart of Berlin, it is a great tourist attraction all day and night. Seriously, this part of the city doesn’t sleep. You can be there at 3am and it will feel like 10:30 pm because there is an endless stream of cars and people. One of my favorite places is the CineStar IMAX im Sony Center.

Yeah, that’s me in January of 2014 with the clothes I thought would do a decent, if not good, job of keeping me warm in Berlin during the Winter. But just look at how beautiful the background is. The Filmhaus building is also really spectacular from the inside. Oh, so many memories here already. I never went to the restaurants here because they are expensive, but the Kino and the ceaseless movement of traffic and passerby are the real beauty of this place. Not to mention the absolutely beautiful lights at the CineStar.

And it changes color from purple to red to blue. It’s breathtaking all on its own.

Postdamer Platz is also where I saw Mars for the first time. It was definitely past midnight around mid-April when I was told to look up into the night sky above Berlin and saw a small reddish-orange dot.

No picture I could have taken with the cheap phone I had bought at the MediaMarkt at Steglitz could have done that image justice. It was gorgeous. A beautiful orange hue resting in the night sky. I remember suddenly feeling very small, and very privileged.

There are many restaurants, all very pricy, and historical landmarks at Potsdamer Platz such as a large part of the wall that separated Berlin for more than 20 years. But there is one part of Potsdamer Platz right around the U-bahn and S-bahn stations.

If you ever go, or if you know the area, it is a plot of small green hills that lie just behind the apartments in that area, and if you go there on a cool night, sit atop the hills and close your eyes, you can feel the magic and wonder of the place.
