Digital twins are a powerful technology used to collect data and create digital models of physical entities in the real world. In essence, they are virtual models of products, processes, or systems that can help organizations monitor and optimize performance in real-time, among other things.

In this guide, I will share my understanding of what a digital twin is, the types of digital twins, and give examples of how one can be used. Keep reading to find out more about this amazing technology!

What is a Digital Twin?

A digital twin is a virtual representation of a physical object or system in the real world that allows engineers to observe, simulate and analyze data from the physical world in real time.

It uses data from its physical counterpart collected from sensors, cameras, and other devices, combined with predictive analytics to create an accurate 3D model of its counterpart. This model can then be used for different purposes, including:

  • Monitor performance.
  • Predict outcomes.
  • Make decisions on repairs or upgrades.
  • Test ideas by running experiments on the digital twin before introducing new changes into the production environment.
