The reactions I get for being childless (and unmarried) on my travels.
Saving a Black African Woman’s womb
I never pictured myself as the woman up above, well certainly never felt safe enough to be in that state. I really admire the women, who have embarked on the journey of motherhood. Thanks mum!
For my part, I was scarred by watching the movie adaptation of Toni Morrison’s book, Beloved. The story is based on a real enslaved woman, who killed her child when she was being pursued by slave-catchers.
Nullipara is the medical term for a woman who has never given birth. I first saw the word, in a letter which my consultant sent me, after our appointment. I’d never seen that word before.
Fast forward to 2022, 4 years later and the near-unanimous reactions from both men and women, about my current status as a seemingly “footloose and fancy-free” single, childless woman in her 40s range from verbal high fives to a look of a deep admiration. It’s left me completely confused.
I’m single by choice but I’m childless because I never found a spouse. I’m pretty sure, I would’ve given it a go, if I’d married the man of my dreams, but he’s happily married to someone else. I can’t get over the fact that most people think, I decided not to have a family of my own.
