Crumbs

You emerge from the shadow of memory
Unannounced
Uninvited
Unwelcome
Leaving in your wake
A trail of pain
Doubt
Regret
Madness.

For so long I fed
Like a bird from your hand
On words
Touches
Glances
Crumbs
Dropped callously, yet carefully
To keep me caged
Famished
Yearning
To fill a void
Of my own creation.

But now
I emerge from your shadow
Unburdened
Unbound
Unwilling
To stoop any longer
For the crumbs you call love.
