Hotels Suck (and you know it…)

Guest hospitality facilities have been around since early biblical times. The Greeks built thermal baths across their villages to offer a little rest and relaxation. The Romans provided mansions as lodging accommodations for their government travelers. The Chinese serviced Silk Road business travelers with tea houses. Where there is civilization there was hospitality.
How are things today?
We have these things called hotels. And they vary in quality, price — and convenience. Yet, despite the estimated 187,000 hotels and 17.5 million guest rooms across the world (source), travelers are still not guaranteed comfort and quality at a consistent price today, which begs to ask: why is that? Hotels know people travel, and travelers need a place to stay. Hotels can get away with gaps in quality, overbooking reservations, delivering poor customer service, and more, simply because they control the traveler. They continue to offer terrible accommodations and inconsistent services because…
What choice do we have?
Even with the advent of AirBnB and the shared economy, the traditional hospitality model has not changed. Dominating the $600B hospitality sector, companies ranging from Hilton to the Ritz, the hotel business has by-in-large maintained its grip over travelers. Even worse, these hotels know the extent of their power and how to squeeze every penny of travelers with fancy “loyalty” programs that simply get us on the hook to spend more money for less quality, charging us a fixed daily rate knowing the majority of travelers are doing exactly what the activity suggests, traveling. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to understand the time actually spent inside of a hotel room represents a fraction of your day between checkin and checkout: rest, work, sleep. What a great racket! So, how can we change this? How can we reverse the power dynamic so travelers are in full control of their experience? What if there was a place where travelers can go to work and play anytime, and only pay for the time they actually used? What an amazing thought, no?
