Early life and education

Manmohan Singh was born on 26 September 1932 in Gah, Punjab, British India (Pre-Partition India). His parents’ names are Gurmukh Singh and Amrit Kaur. His mother passed away when Manmohan Singh was young. After the partition of India and Pakistan, his family moved to Amritsar, India,

Manmohan Singh studied at Hindu College, Amritsar. In Punjab, he studied economics and obtained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He completed his Economics Tripos at the University of Cambridge in 1957 as a member of the College of “ St John’s “.

After the completion of his education at Cambridge, Manmohan Singh returned to India and served as a teacher at Panjab University and later in 1960, he went to Oxford University for D.Phil.

Early career

He returned to India after completing his D.Phil and was a senior lecturer of economics at Panjab University. He remained Professor of Economics there until 1965.

Later, he was appointed as an advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Trade, recognizing Manmohan Singh’s talent as an economist.

He was on the Planning Commission till 1982, and in 1982, he was appointed as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India under the then Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and held the position as RBI Governor until 1985. He was the General Secretary of the South Commission and in 1991 he was made the Chairman of the University Grants Commission.

After the completion of his education at Cambridge, Manmohan Singh returned to India and served as a teacher at Panjab University and later in 1960, he went to Oxford University for D.Phil.

Family and personal life

Manmohan Singh’s mother’s name was Amrit Kaur. When Manmohan Singh was young, his mother had passed away. Father’s name was Gurmukh Singh, he used to work as Clerk. He also had a brother who died at a young age.

His step-mother’s name was Sitawanti Kaur, his half-brother’s name was Surinder Singh Kohli, Daljit Singh Kohli, Surjeet Singh Kohli, all three are also Politicians.

He has 6 Half-Sister’s whose names are Gobind Kaur, Pritam Kaur, Nirman Kaur, Narinder Kaur, Gyan Kaur, and we do not know the name of a sister.

In the year 1958, Manmohan Singh married a girl named Gursharan Kaur. They have three daughters, Amrit Singh (Human Rights Lawyer), Daman Singh (Writer) and Upinder Singh (Historian).
