Korean “gukbap”, a hearty soup with rice, is winning over food lovers worldwide.

It’s becoming quite a hit, thanks to its features in Korean shows and media.

Experts noticed this trend, especially in places like Seoul’s Hongdae area, where it’s common to see international foodies queueing up at gukbap eateries.

Fans of Korean culture, including K-pop enthusiasts from Italy and German tourists, have expressed their eagerness to try gukbap after seeing their favorite celebrities enjoy it or spotting the long lines it draws.

Locals have also observed a surge in foreign patrons at restaurants serving gukbap and kimchi jjigae (stew) during meal times.

To accommodate the international crowd, gukbap spots in tourist areas are now offering multilingual menus and service kiosks.

One restaurant worker in Hongdae mentioned a noticeable increase in overseas visitors post-pandemic, with many foreign customers lining up, some straight off their travels with luggage in tow.

Gukbap has long been a Korean comfort food staple, known for its affordability and variety.

Its international fame has skyrocketed, propelled by the global appeal of K-pop, Korean TV, films, and cuisine.
