While most parents may endorse their child to be themselves, they do not encourage them to be gay. I’ve witnessed parents in fact yell at their children for doing things they felt were gay.

I have a gay brother so I can identify with what you’re saying. Growing up, my mother always encouraged my brother to be himself, while my father would get upset and frustrated when my brother did something “gay.” My brother has recently confided in me and explained that the opposite reactions he revived from our parents made it harder for him to “come out of the closet.”
