The English band from Surrey made their eighth with more angst than ever before.

Label: Underdog / AWAL

Genre: Rock

You Me At Six has been a band since 2004, and I have listened to their albums since Sinners Never Sleep in 2011. That album ranked on the charts for the band, launching them into one of the top bands in the UK.

The band, over the years, has made rock music with undertones of existential dread. Their eighth album, Truth Decay, is no different.

Truth Decay offers a sense of dark romance with heavy guitars alluding to their earlier albums.

The band’s single “heartLESS” is the perfect song to describe the romantic vibe of the album. The band is in water in the video and album cover, but there is fire around them. The lyrics, “There’s no sign of moving on/ Yeah, you know I’m not heartless/ My heart is just a mess,” shows the disconnect and longing with a partner even though the relationship might be over — hence treading on water.

Angst and nostalgia are prominent features in this album. The song “Mixed Emotions (I Didn’t Know How to Tell You About What I Was Going Through)” discusses nostalgia through heavy topics. The lyrics “Oh, we were just boys back then/ Hanging on by a thread/ Didn’t know how to tell you/ What it was I had been going through/ Oh, it’s better left unsaid/ It’s been weighing me down since then” allude to mental health issues and the guilt of not telling someone what they are going through.

The song “Traumatic Iconic” is a classic You Me At Six song with the soft lull of the guitar and lead singer Josh Franceschi’s raspy vocals. It’s one of my favorites on the album as it starts quietly, then the chorus is led by heavy drums.

This album has a lot of dark undertones adding to the emo-rock genre they are a part of, but it’s what this world needs right now. Everyone can find a song they relate to on this album through romance and angst, specifically young adults trying to make it in this world.

I rate this album 9 out of 10 because of how excellent the drums, guitar, vocals, production, and lyrics were.

Check out their music. If you love rock music, you won’t regret it.
