I absolutely agree with you, and am jumping on to amplify another piece of the sound bite vs. content problem we are facing. It is absurd that we call our current Presidential “debates” a debate. They are nothing like an actual debate. When Lincoln and Douglass toured the states debating, I’m pretty sure they each had more than two minutes to answer. There is a value in providing information in a simplified and summarized way, but the problem is our society no longer expects meaningful dialogue as part of a debate.

In my professional life, I’ve worked with very BIG picture issues, like government trends over decades and billions of dollars. I’ve come to live by the motto, “There’s always more context.” To make a wise decision, you need all the relevant context. By relying on communication by headlines and sound bites, we are removing facts from their context. And without context, its a lot easier to twist facts to mean whatever you want them to.

Here’s my stance. I will speak with respect for all people, but deference for no one. I will speak up against actions or ideas, but I will not shame people.
