How quickly did these details and implications crystalize for you? Was it a matter of writing the scene and immediately realizing the things you mentioned — societal handling of prisons, the man being an outsider, how she spends her time, and so on? Or did that occur to you over a longer period of time?
The quill pen and lack of plumbing suggest a pre-modern technology level, too. Was that plan or discovery?
