Students from low income comunites and diverse backgrounds usually start off with a disadvantage beause of the negative stereotypes about them and systemic and institutional oppression that exists. There is a lack of diversity in the classroom in regards to teachers.

I agree with this statement. Students know about the stereotypes they are labeled with, and this can sometimes be discouraging. Also, not having a teacher they can relate with can be problematic because they might not respect or trust that teacher. It is important that the teacher establishes a safe environment for learning, and takes the time to get to know the students and community.
