Although the main reason to use is to lower the risk of a hernia recurring, there have been a number of hernia mesh complications reported by the patients. In February 2018, the FDA released a statement on hernia surgical mesh implant citing “despite reduced rates of recurrence, there are situations where the use of surgical mesh for hernia repair may not be recommended. Patients should talk to their surgeons about their specific circumstances and their best options and alternatives for hernia repair.”

Infected hernia mesh can cause devastating complications. It is difficult to cure the mesh infections with just antibiotics and often needs corrective surgery to cure the condition.

How can you tell if you have failed hernia mesh?

Hernia mesh complications may often be difficult to identify, depending on the severity of the issue. Let’s have a look at the common symptoms of the defective mesh issues:

· Pain and Discomfort: The most common sign of a failed hernia mesh is major pain and discomfort which is often accompanied by swelling or bruising. These symptoms may be associated with skin rash which usually occurs near the incision or bulge. Pain may occur near the abdomen, stomach, groin, leg, or testicle depending on the type of hernia. For some patients, tenderness and pain are the only indicators of complications.

· Bowel Obstruction: It is the blockage that develops in the large or small intestine and causes difficulty with defecating or urinating. Often, these obstructions may be caused by an adhesion that can occur when scar-tissue or loops of the intestines attaches to the mesh. If conditions become severe, it might need a removal of the bowel through surgical intervention.

· Bleeding and Infection: Chronic infections are the most clearly identifiable complications associated with failed hernia mesh. For some patients, the infections may be severe leading to redness of skin and an exothermal reaction of the skin. There is an increased risk of seroma with a defective implant which is when the fluid builds near the implant site. In such cases, the buildup of fluid may cause secretions and eventually lead to infection.

· Hernia Recurrence: One of the most commonly reported adverse report of the hernia mesh complications is hernia recurrence. Mesh migration, fistula, adhesion, and perforation are the variety of complications associated with hernia mesh. A non-healing wound may develop and might need future surgeries with longer recovery time.

Hernia Mesh Revision Surgeries

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have got a huge number of adverse event reports that are linked to hernia mesh complications. It prompted them to initiate device recalls for the mesh manufacturers marketing defective devices.

Regardless of pain levels, mild, moderate or severe, physicians always recommend for revision surgeries.
