THE AFRICAN AMERICAN MIDDLE CLASS

Since the emancipation from slavery, there has always been a black middle class in America. However, in that time period it was only consisted of mostly very fair skinned black who were more likely to be accepted in the white community. Not only were those blacks accepted in the white community, but they were able to work better jobs. However, light skinned blacks were still segregated from whites, and not accepted by other blacks.

A lot of individuals who considered themselves middle-class were close to the inner city and lived among the working class and poor african americans. Thanks to the Civil Rights movement things began to take a turn beginning in the 60s. The 60s were a beginning of a time period when the black middle class began to grow and blacks gained more white collar jobs.
