Cervantes Bill to Track Registered Sex Offenders Goes to Governor

As a member of the State Assembly, Sabrina Cervantes authored Assembly Bill 1994, which has been approved by both houses of the California Legislature and now goes to Governor Brown for his signature or veto.
Current law requires state prisons and state hospitals to notify the Department of Justice when a registered sex offender is admitted to or is released from such a facility. However, there is no such requirement for local county jails. This means that neither the public nor law enforcement has the capacity to track registered sex offenders who enter or leave county jails.
Assembly Bill 1994 closes this loophole by also requiring county jails to notify the Department of Justice when a registered sex offender is admitted or released. This bill will provide law enforcement with more tools to track sex offenders, and help ensure the security of our communities.
The bill is supported by California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, the California Police Chiefs Association, the California District Attorneys Association, and the Riverside Sheriffs’ Association.
Sabrina Cervantes is running for re-election to continue representing California’s 60th State Assembly District, which includes Corona, Eastvale, Jurupa Valley, Norco, and portions of the City of Riverside.
