Why I’m writing everyday on Medium

I have given myself a challenge. I want to write and post something on medium for 30 days in a row (This is day 9).

Why? Why would I do this to myself?

As any writer knows we can often stare at a blank page or blinking cursor for hours. When we finally gain the courage to hit that key or put that pen to paper sometimes a deluge of thoughts and words will come pouring out. These times are rare. More often than not we will have a sentence to show for our time.

So why would I subject myself to having to post something every day?

Here are my reasons:

  • It forces me to practice writing every day. Like any skill (and writing is a skill) it gets better with practice. This challenge will force me to write every single day. I don’t have the option of “will I write today?”. My only option is “What will I write today?”. It is non negotiable.
  • I am my own worst critic (aren’t we all?). By forcing myself to post something everyday I am putting myself out there. I have written stuff in the past that I thought was garbage that really resonated with people. On the opposite end of the spectrum, I have written things that I have thought of as brilliant that I released to crickets. How will I know what’s good or not unless I start putting it out there?
  • I have been reading medium articles for the past year. I have given the odd “recommend” here and there (mediums version of a like) but that’s it. I am a big believer in the “if you use it, contribute to it” philosophy. I feel like I have an obligation to add content to this awesome platform.
  • It’s fun and I like it. It is as simple as that.

Let me challenge you.

If you have any interest in writing. Sit down and write. Want to know if it’s any good. Get it out in the world. There has never been a better time to be a creator than now. We have the world at our fingertips. Feedback is only a click away.

Don’t you have a responsibility to get it out there? You never know, you might have a good time doing it.
