THE IMPORTANCE OF LEADERSHIP
Five Ways How Developing Your Inner Leader Can Change Your Life.

When you think of a leader what comes to mind? For some, it might be an executive at the company that you work for, or your boss. Maybe a U.S. President or other government officials might come to mind. Or perhaps the image of the quarterback of your favorite football teams comes up. Many people make the mistake that leadership is a title or a position. The good news is that it’s not. Instead, it’s a mindset and the ability to influence and impact others. This is something that anyone can develop, and if you choose to do so you can change your life.
There are five ways that developing your leadership skills can improve your life:
(1) Opportunities at Work. To start, as you develop as a leader people will notice. Leadership requires extra work and energy — most people won’t do this. They would rather be led than lead, this is the path of least resistance. So when someone starts to lead, it stands out. If done correctly, your employer will start to notice this. The good thing about this is, when you lead at work, this adds massive value to your employer. When there is strong leadership, employees produce more and perform better. From a business standpoint, this is increases their profit margin.
As you become more valuable to your employer, and to the market place, your earning potential also increases. This is illustrated in a classic cliche “The more you learn, the more you earn.”
When you showcase your inner leader at work, not only can you improve your chances of earning more, you also create opportunities. This could mean a promotion or being tasked to lead a project. These opportunities build your resume and give you valuable life experiences.

(2) Opportunities in Life. Along with creating opportunities at you, as you develop your inner leader, you also create opportunities in life.
Similar to co-workers, people in all areas of your life want to be led. Most likely there are people in your family that want to be led, and as you develop your inner leader, they will allow you to do so. The same could go for people in your spiritual groups, or in your community. If you dare to grow as a leader, the possibilities are nearly limitless.

(3) Create Art. Leadership is not only a way to increase your salary and to create opportunities, it can also be a method of art, or self-expression. Leadership involves dealing with people — people are complex and at times can be unpredictable — and there many different ways one can lead (for example: servant leaders, transformational leadership. etc). Given these multiple variables, leadership can be seen as a form of art. At any moment you could be given a situation to deal with and you have to be able to consider the people involved and their personalities, how these people respond to different leadership styles, and then finding an approach that leads to a solution. If this was a science, then it would be easy to create an easy to follow manual or process, but since it’s an art, creativity and flexibility will be required.
We started with the physical or tangible benefits of developing your leadership. Now, the last two reasons will go deeper, and will show how your life can be impacted at a higher and more fulfilling level.
(4) Change Lives. When you lead others, and lead them well, you will make a lasting impression on their lives. Therefore, when you develop your inner leader, you create the possibility of being able to add value to other people. Being in a leadership role myself, I can attest to the truth of this assertion — there is no better feeling than after helping someone solve problem or after coaching someone on performance and they come back to you to thank you with genuine gratitude or you see them get a bump in pay or a promotion. This is an excellent way to leave a legacy.
(5) Create Meaning and Purpose. When you combine the four benefits of developing your inner leader, you begin create something in your life that most people, deep down, crave: meaning and purpose. As you develop as a leader and are focused on adding value to others, you are living out a mission. This mission connects you with something that is bigger than yourself — you are not only changing yourself, but you are also changing and impacting the lives of others. This takes your focus off yourself, and places on the people you interact with. Once I started doing this, my cup started to fill.
Leading, influencing, inspiring, motivating, and coaching others is much more enjoyable that than treating my job as a 9 to 5 — punch the time card — and then go home. That is empty and unfulfilling. It make my week days miserable and my weekends fly by too fast. It gave me the Monday blues, and I was living for weekend; out of 7 days of a week I was wishing away 5 and only “enjoying” 2. This is not how we are meant to live life. Becoming a leader has helped me to break that cycle, and to love each and every day; I believe it can do the same for you.
