Dragonflies ~ La Libélula

Did you know that a swarm of dragonflies is sometimes called a ‘dazzle’? On this day it certainly applied.

Sitting at her desk, facing the waves, she looked up to see many winged bodies clinging to the mosquito netting outside the massive plate glass windows. Two landed right on the glass, clinging briefly before buzzing off again. There were more whizzing through the air. Small ones, larger ones, mating pairs, las libélulas were dancing by the hundredfold. An entire swarm covered the beachfront patio space of the house she had rented, from which to start again.

Most of these dragonflies were dark, wearing muted colors, not the brilliantly ornamental hues of those that frequented the ponds she had tended in her old life.

Leaping up from her writing desk she ran to the patio, pausing to carefully close screens and doors so none of her visitors would be trapped inside. A mating pair hovered directly in front of her eyes. Ignoring her outstretched fingers, they executed a hairpin turn, still coupled, and sped out of sight. It was difficult to pinpoint any one of them in the bright morning sunlight, so she lowered her gaze to the hundreds of tiny flitting shadows dancing across the paving stones at her feet.

As she looked down, the swarm seemed to follow her focus. Many of the smallest participants landed, briefly, some on her dress, her sandals, touching down for instants only.

She asked the winds for assistance only yesterday, she thought. She called to the elementals, the spirits of the stone and green worlds, and of the elements air, earth, fire, and water. She meditated long, listening to the music of the stars, the ocean waves, the night birds and the winds.

Today, the magical swarming. She felt her face begin to burn, tilted into the sun as it was. Her morning plans had not included being out without the protection of sunblock, hat or shades. As she retreated into the embrace of palms and sea grape hedges she recalled the ancient wisdom of this dazzling display.

The medicine of dragonfly is about the breaking of illusions, especially those illusions that prevent growth and maturity. Dragonfly is the bringer of visions of power.

Flighty and carefree dragonflies symbolize swiftness and motion. Dragonfly medicine helps to stir the energies of chaos during a transition, or a time of change.

Dragonfly is the guardian of dreaming and the façade we accept as physical reality. To have one’s awareness brought into the consciousness of la libélula is to be asked to dream. The iridescence of Dragonfly’s wings reminds us of colors not found in our everyday experience. It brings the awareness of a place where magic reigns. It speaks of greater dimensions of reality, and help us to travel to a realm of light in which spiritual expansion is possible.

This medicine is especially helpful for those who feel blocked in their creativity. Dragonfly reminds that ordinary physical reality isn’t all that available to us. The dragonfly person may appear almost schizophrenic, hovering, absorbing light and energy for a time, and then flitting off to a new project.

As her focus shifted inward, the swarm lifted into the air, flying in cloud formation over the house and disappearing into the sunlit day. The energy on the patio sparkled with the glittering bits of dream they trailed behind them.

I asked the elementals to collaborate, she mused to herself.

“Now that’s what I call a sign,” she heard herself say.
