I was far better off designing opportunities for students to go out and observe and interact with that world in structured ways, and to bring back their observations and experiences for the group to analyze and discuss.

I’m inspired daily by the way the kids in our global K-8 community at diy.org respond to our online challenges. We have zero lectures and this allows kids to bring their own creativity and curiosity to each project they do. It sparks interesting conversations between them too! From my own observations, lectures rob kids of the best parts of learning. I wholeheartedly agree with your conclusions here.
