The wonders of life

The Little things that make life extraordinary

The Wellcome images of 2014 have just been released. It is an award for outstanding biomedical images that are highly favoured by the public. More of these microscopic images can be found on their website.

What amazes me is that those images all captured objects that we cannot normally see with our naked eye. With the help of a microscope, we are now able to explore another depth of beauty that we weren’t aware of previously. We seem to always ignore the small and the insignificant. Yet, not only is the ‘Mega’ things such as the Universe, the Sun and the Milky Way that is fascinating to understand, in fact, the little ‘Micro’ things that are close to you and I in everyday life also contents the wonders of life and secrets that are waiting to be discovered.

As a scientist, sometimes we do get numbed by the routine experiments we do yet these pictures reminded me the real philosophy behind science; the idea of finding out and understanding life around us.

Whether you are a scientist, an artist, a banker, a cook or whatever your occupation or ambitions are, just pause for a little while every day and you would realize the little things in life that might just make your ordinary life extraordinary.

If you haven’t had a chance to look at those images, the BBC presented a few key images with a brief introduction for each of them and you can do so via this link: http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-26464400.
