Corruption in Banking and Politics: America Yearns to Breathe Free
"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" — part of poem on Statue of Liberty written by Emma Lazarus in 1883
We have become the huddled masses. There is a malaise from shore to shore that needs to be addressed, and it needs to be addressed pronto.
Today’s political climate is based on a foundation of lies perpetuated by fear and ignorance. And America is tired. We feel a sense of lack and we are yearning to breathe free.
The destabilization of our society is not caused by gay marriage or whether or not you salute the flag or go to church. There is one main culprit in all of this: the petulance of big businesses.
Off-shore accounts and jobs overseas are not caused by undocumented immigrants. Those are decisions made is boardrooms to “please Wall Street.” We are continually in a state of destabilization with a well structured societal one-two punch.
First (Sucker) Punch
One of the most clever ploys was to get people to include stocks in their portfolio instead of promoting having savings accounts. Therefore, as an investor, people tolerated whatever the corporation wanted as long as the value of their stocks went up.
Second (Sucker) Punch
Media garbage about getting rich quickly mixed with one or two true stories of meteoric success has turned the American mindset into one of constant lack. Spend, spend, spend and then get berated for spending too much and not being good enough because of your bad credit score. Who can win under those circumstances? Individuals become discouraged as they perceive the American dream to be dead or, at the very least, a nightmare.
In Comes the Malaise
Anxiety and stress are on the rise. Pensions are a thing of the past thus removing the anticipation of a decent retirement. Taxes are squandered in a manner that has crippled Social Security. But the problem is occluded by mirrors and other illusions.
We are being played against one another while “our” government panders to big businesses which make bold claims about trickle down economy and other lies. I put the word “our” in quotes because the government we have had over the last 30 years has been changing into something that has forgotten that its job is to serve the needs of the people.
Follow the Money
Follow the money and you will see where all of everyone’s hard earned income is going. We must implement existing solutions for dealing with the corruption in banking and politics. Voting for the next president is important. However, the work must continue beyond that by taking an active part in what happens in this country. This is every citizens responsibility.
What do we need to do? We are each responsible for taking care that our masses are not huddled in fear, but huddled in teamwork. Get informed about every piece of legislation. Make a ruckus about government poor spending decisions. Vote when anything must be voted upon.
It is our job to write our destiny so that we can ensure that each person on our shores, and every generation after this one, has the opportunity to breathe freely knowing that we are at last on a path that is for us (the people) rather that against us.
Together, “we hold these truths to be self evident...” (from the United States of America’s Declaration of Independence)
